Toxicology Workshop on Packaging Materials in Contact with Food, New Legislative Challenges & Sustainable Perspectives


At the opening presentation, Dr. Theofania Tsironi (Associate Professor, Food Engineering and Processing Laboratory, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition) outlined the current legislative requirements for the Toxicological Safety of Packaging Materials. Dr. Aikaterini Kalliambakou (Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology, Department of Biotechnology, AUA) presented the development of a single protocol for testing the cytotoxicity of any food packaging and finally presented data analyzing a case study of edible film.
Ms. Megremi (packaging laboratory manager, MSc Agronomist, QACS) analyzed the requirements for PFAS detection in packaging materials, according to Article 5 of European Regulation 2025/40 PPWR with an implementation horizon of August 12, 2026, followed by Ms. Xanthidou Kyriaki (Chemist MSc, Head of the Food Contact Materials Laboratory at Tsakalidis Analysis & Testing) who developed the issue of the safety of recycled plastics in contact with food, the challenges of identification and the risk assessment of unintentionally added substances (NIAS) referring to Article 7 of the European Regulation 2025/40 PPWR with an implementation horizon of 2030.
Mr. Andreas Mitropoulos (Chemical Engineer, Henkel country manager) analyzed the migration mechanisms of primary aromatic amines from adhesives into packaged food, highlighted the risks to human health and finally presented technical solutions. In the last presentation, Dr. Lefteris Tourasanidis (R&D manager, Chatzopoulos SA) referred to the challenges of the new PPWR regulation, citing the time milestones for certain critical articles.
